Doctoral Project

Press Censorship in the British Empire with a Special Focus on Hong Kong, 1938-1941

This project uses digital humanities to research censorship in British Hong Kong during (parts of) the Second Sino-Japanese War. It combines archival material with close- and distant reading of censored Chinese newspaper articles to shed light on censorship laws, institutions and practices in Colonial Hong Kong and their reciprocity in the British Empire. A new methodology for quantifying visible censorship combined with a close reading of the censored articles give unprecedented insights into what material the British authorities in Hong Kong censored. The dissertation reveals how the interactions between Britain and Hong Kong led to constant negotiations of censorship between the actors and resulted in multiple layers of censorship on the spot. The results shed light not only on Hong Kong but also on how British colonial censorship worked empire-wide.
